Ayutthaya derives its name from the ancient Indian city of Ayodhya based on the Indian epic, Ramayana. Ayutthaya was founded in 1351 by King U Thong. At its peak around 1700 CE, Ayutthaya boasted of a population of approximately 1 million citizens, and was one of the most prosperous cities in the world. In 1767, the city was destroyed by the Burmese army. The ruins of the old city are preserved in the Ayutthaya historical park, which is recognized internationally as a UNESCO world heritage site.
