These rub-in, brush-out cleaners can be utilized to remove surface soil, oil, and odor during illness or for any-time waterless freshening.

• Almond meal, bran, cornmeal, oatmeal, sawdust, or talc. can be sprinkled through the hair, massaged in for 5 minutes, then brushed out. Mixing a tablespoon of baking soda with any of these substances aids odor control. Place your favorite dried flowers or herbs or essential oils on top of the mix for scent.
• Borax, dissolved in alcohol and rubbed into well-brushed hair, then removed with a towel is a hundred-year- old solution.
• Egg white, beaten to a stiff meringue, rubbed into the hair and scalp and allowed to dry before being brushed out, is used for bedridden patients in European hospitals.
• Witch hazel, or an antiseptic mouthwash, applied to the scalp and thoroughly brushed out, relieves "itchiness" and removed surface contaminants. For blondes, 3-percent hydrogen peroxide will serve the same purpose and lighten hair roots.
